What Makes a Weave Name
Weave names in the Wheel of Time tend to follow a few clean patterns. Some are simple verbs, like Healing, Delving, or Listening to the Wind. Others borrow a place or person, as in Fire of Tar Valon or Callandor's Light. A third group describes the shape of the effect, like Arrows of Fire, Deathgate, or Blossoms of Fire. Good invented names lean into one of these forms and avoid sounding like a modern spell list. Keep them short, evocative, and grounded in the five elements of Air, Water, Earth, Fire, and Spirit.
Matching Weave to Wielder
An Aes Sedai of the Yellow Ajah will know dozens of Healing weaves with quiet, clinical names. A Red sister hunting men who can channel will favour shielding and binding weaves with sharp, final names. Asha'man trained at the Black Tower lean into battle weaves with brutal labels like Blossoms of Fire or Arrows of Fire. Wise Ones of the Aiel waste tend toward dream and earth weaves with names rooted in stone and wind. Pick a name that signals which tradition taught it, and the weave gains instant flavour.
Using Weaves in Play
For tabletop sessions, give each named weave a one-line effect, a required element mix, and a difficulty. Players who learn a weave by name should be able to call it at the table, which speeds combat and makes channeling feel like craft rather than freeform magic. For fiction, treat weave names as in-world jargon. Channelers say them in shorthand to each other, but narration can slow down to describe the threads of Fire and Air braiding into a sword of light when the moment deserves it.
Lost and Forbidden Weaves
Some of the most useful generator results will be weaves no one alive remembers. Lean into that. Let a character find a weave name carved inside an Age of Legends ter'angreal, or hear it in a dream from a Forsaken trying to bait them. Forbidden weaves, like balefire or compulsion variants, should carry weight and consequence. A name that sounds beautiful, like Choedan Kal's Mercy, can hide a working that unmakes the Pattern itself.
Naming Your Weave
Crafting a name for your new weave? Consider these:
- What is the primary Power used-Earth, Air, Fire, Water, or Spirit?
- Does the name hint at its function-healing, attacking, or something else?
- How does the name reflect the complexity or simplicity of the weave?
- Should it have a poetic or a more direct, technical sound?
- Will it feel at home alongside names like Balefire and The Flame of Tar Valon?
