World of Darkness name generators for gothic-punk horror
World of Darkness is not fantasy placed far away from daily life; it is a darker version of the world outside the window. Its names need to feel like they could appear on a business card, a police report, a club flyer, an old family ledger or a forbidden ritual note. A vampire elder may use a name polished by centuries of reinvention. A young Kindred might cling to a mortal name that no longer fits. A werewolf can carry a birth name, a deed name, a pack identity and a spiritual role all at once. A mage may need a mundane name for taxes, a shadow name for the occult world and a reputation that changes depending on who is telling the story. This category is built for that layered sense of identity.
Names for chronicles, clans and supernatural societies
In World of Darkness-style storytelling, names are never neutral. They can reveal lineage, territory, ideology, secrecy or social standing. Vampire names may lean into old money, street influence, religious dread, aristocratic performance or subcultural cool. A coterie name should suggest what binds the group: survival, ambition, blackmail, shared feeding grounds or a political patron. Werewolf names can be rawer and more symbolic, shaped by deeds, spirits, scars, rage and the land they defend. Mage names can feel philosophical, technical, ecstatic, academic or deliberately cryptic. Hunter cells, occult clubs and secret societies need names that sound plausible enough to hide in plain sight while still carrying unease. The generators in this collection give you starting points for all of those social layers.
Urban horror needs believable names
The strongest names in this setting do not always announce themselves as supernatural. A haven called The Red Chapel may work for a dramatic vampire chronicle, but a basement bar named Mercer & Vale might be more frightening if everyone in the city knows not to ask who owns it. A mage cabal can use a poetic title, a research collective, an art project or a fake consulting firm. A hunter cell may have a grim nickname used only in burner-phone messages. A ghost story might revolve around an ordinary apartment building whose name becomes unbearable after the players learn what happened there. Because World of Darkness relies on the tension between the familiar and the hidden, useful names often sit right on that edge.
Character names as masks
For individual characters, think about what the name is hiding. Is it a legal name, a chosen name, a feeding name, a deed name, a ritual name, an online alias or a title imposed by enemies? A vampire who has survived for centuries may have abandoned several identities, keeping only the one that gives them the most leverage tonight. A werewolf deed name may preserve a moment of courage or shame. A mage’s shadow name can express belief, obsession or deliberate misdirection. Even mortals can have layered identities: journalists, club owners, fixers, cult survivors and detectives all live by what they reveal and what they conceal. A good World of Darkness name should give the Storyteller something to use in a scene.
Using generators for places, factions and artifacts
This category is also useful beyond people. Chronicles need nightclub names, safe houses, haunted streets, old money families, occult bookstores, abandoned hospitals, hedge societies, private security firms, blood cults, pack territories, chantries and cursed objects. Place names should fit the city first and the supernatural second. A name that sounds too obviously evil can break the illusion, while a normal name with one unsettling detail can make players lean forward. Artifact names can be poetic, academic, devotional or bureaucratic, depending on whether the item belongs in a museum case, a reliquary, a pawn shop or an evidence locker. Use the generators to create enough texture that the world feels inhabited before the horror appears.
For storytellers and players
Whether you are preparing a Vampire: The Masquerade chronicle, a werewolf pack drama, a mage conspiracy, a hunter investigation or an original urban horror game inspired by the same mood, names help set the social temperature. Generate several options and ask what each one implies: Who gave this name? Who still uses it? Who refuses to say it? Who has the right to shorten it? The best World of Darkness-style names create questions about power, memory, debt and fear. They should feel usable in dialogue, searchable in a dossier and dangerous when spoken in the wrong room. Use this collection to build names that feel modern on the surface and haunted underneath.
