Titles in the World of Eora
In Eora, titles do the work that surnames sometimes do not. A Glanfathan tribesman is known by the role he holds for his fangs; a Vailian merchant is named for the trade-house she fronts; an Aedyran officer carries the rank that bound him to oath. Avowed inherits this from the Pillars tradition - titles are political claims and cultural anchors, not flavour text. An animancer who introduces herself as Adept of the Inner Lantern is telling you which school she trained in, which patron sanctioned her practice, and which arguments she has already lost. Even on the rough frontier of the Living Lands, where the Steel Garrote and the Aedyran Envoy walk armed past hill-shrines, the first thing strangers exchange is not a name but a station.
Using Generated NPC Titles
The titles produced here are designed to slot directly in front of an NPC name, or stand alone as an introduction to a faceless official. Pair them with the names you already use for Avowed characters and you have an instant pedigree the player can read at a glance.
For Tabletop Game Masters
When a player asks who the bored bureaucrat at the gate actually is, give them "Magister Velhart of the Inner Archive" instead of "some clerk". The title hints at backstory - Aedyran, animancy-adjacent, probably resented by the local Glanfathan elders - without forcing you to write a dossier on the spot.
For Fan Fiction Writers
Titles are gifts to your prose. "Watcher of the Bog" introduces a Living Lands ranger before she draws her bow; "Envoy of the Steel Garrote" warns the reader that the soft-spoken visitor is a torturer with imperial authority. Lean on the title to do the heavy lifting of setting and tone.
For Modders and Worldbuilders
If you are populating a new region of the Living Lands or building a Pillars-flavoured campaign of your own, batch-generate fifty titles, sort them by faction, and you have a credible roster of NPCs before you write a single quest line.
What a Title Carries
Eoran titles compress a great deal of political signal into two or three words. The cultural prefix tells you the speaker's allegiance - Aedyran ranks lean martial and oath-bound (Captain, Warden, Magister); Vailian station epithets sound mercantile (Padre, Donnaga, Castellan-of-the-Ledger); Glanfathan titles invoke the land itself (Mossblade, Fang-Keeper, Speaker for the Roots); Rauatai naval titles carry tide-imagery (Captain of the Vellocine, Tideforger, Salt-Marshal). The suffixed domain - Of the Crown, Of the Lantern, Of the Bog, Of the Storm Court - places the bearer at a specific institution, shrine, or contested ground. Read together, the title says where this NPC stands and what they will probably want from your party.
Tips for Choosing the Right Title
- Match the cultural prefix to your NPC's faction - an Aedyran loyalist should not casually wear a Glanfathan epithet without a story to explain it.
- Use animancy specialisations (Adept, Inquisitor, Lantern-Bearer) to telegraph whether the NPC is research-minded, witch-hunting, or sacramental.
- Give frontier characters compound titles - Watcher of the Bog, Envoy of the Steel Garrote - to signal that the Living Lands forces every officer to wear two hats.
- Save the longest, most ceremonial titles (High Priest of the Inner Crown) for genuine power brokers; over-use cheapens the political weight.
- Let the title contradict the NPC - a soft-spoken "Inquisitor of the Ash Lantern" hits harder than a snarling one.
- When in doubt, say the title aloud. If it scans like a Pillars codex entry, it will scan in play.
Inspiration Prompts
Use these reflective questions to push a generated title into a fully realised NPC:
- Which faction conferred this title, and who would strip it away if they could?
- What does the bearer have to do - every season - to keep the title legitimate?
- Is the title respected on the Aedyran side of the border but mocked on the Glanfathan side?
- What act of animancy, war, or trade earned the suffixed domain in the first place?
- Does the NPC introduce themselves with the title proudly, reluctantly, or as a warning?
- How does a player character reacting to the title (mocking it, honouring it, ignoring it) change the encounter?
Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about the NPC Title Generator (Avowed) and how it can sharpen your Eoran cast.
How does the NPC Title Generator (Avowed) work?
Click Generate to draw a random title built from Aedyran, Vailian, Glanfathan, Rauatai, animancer, and Living Lands frontier conventions, ready to attach to any NPC name.
Can I specify the type of title I want?
The generator pulls from the full Eoran spread, so reroll until a result fits the faction or station you need - or pick the half of the title that suits and rewrite the rest.
Are the titles unique?
Each title is hand-authored against Eoran naming conventions and held in a large pool, so repeats inside a single session are rare and easy to skip past.
How many NPC titles can I generate?
There is no limit. Keep clicking until your roster of merchants, magisters, wardens, and envoys feels properly populated.
How do I save my favorite titles?
Click the heart icon beside any result to save it to your favorites list, or click the text directly to copy it to your clipboard for instant use.
