Goblins of the Warhammer world
Goblins, or grots, are the smaller, sneakier cousins of orcs. They make up for their size with sheer numbers, dirty tricks, and an alarming fondness for fungus. In tabletop lore they fight in massive mobs, ride giant spiders or wolves, and worship gods of mischief and the moon. A good goblin name should feel like a snicker behind your back: short, sharp, and slightly insulting even when it is just a greeting.
Tribes and naming styles
Different goblin tribes lean into different sounds. Night Goblins, who live in dank caves and chew strange mushrooms, often have names with hissing S and Z sounds, plus a nod to darkness or shrooms. Forest Goblins prefer twitchier, spider-themed names full of K and T sounds. Hobgoblins, taller and more organised, tend toward harsher, almost mongol-flavoured names that sound at home leading a slave caravan across the steppe. This generator mixes all of those flavours so you can pick what fits your warband.
Using goblin names in your games
For Warhammer: The Old World or Age of Sigmar, name your warboss, your shaman, and the leaders of each unit. A named character is far more fun to lose, and goblins lose a lot. In Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay or Soulbound, a goblin player character or villain becomes more memorable with a name that sounds like an insult shouted in a dark tunnel. Even in homebrew fantasy settings, these names work for any tribe of nasty little raiders.
Picking a name that sticks
Look for names that feel mean but easy to shout. A single short word usually beats a long one. If you want a boss, add a brutal nickname after the name, like the Skull-Splitter or da Krooked. If you want a sneak, keep it short and slippery. Whatever you choose, make sure it sounds like something a much bigger creature would step on without a second thought.
Unleash Your Inner Goblin
Crafting a unique goblin name can be an adventure in itself. Consider these questions to inspire your creativity and help you generate a memorable name.
- What is your goblin's defining trait or personality?
- Does your goblin have a particular obsession or hobby?
- What environment does your goblin hail from (swamps, caves, or urban areas)?
- Is there a specific creature or object your goblin is fond of or has a connection to?
- What sound do you think best represents your goblin's mischievous nature?
