Who are the Easterlings
The Easterlings are not a single people but a sweeping term used by Westerners for the many tribes and nations of Rhun and the lands beyond. Among them are the Wainriders who once threatened Gondor, the Balchoth who broke against Rohan, and the Variags of Khand. Some served Sauron willingly, others were drawn in by old enmities, and still others lived far from the wars of the Ring entirely.
What their names sound like
Tolkien gave us only a handful of canonical Easterling names, including Khamul and Bor. From these we can sense a tradition that favors strong consonants, short syllables, and a certain weight on the tongue. Names often sound martial, sometimes guttural, with hints of older languages from beyond the maps drawn in the West.
How to use the generator
- Name warriors and captains in fan fiction set during the Third Age.
- Build out tribes and clans for a Middle-earth tabletop campaign.
- Find names for chieftains who rise after the fall of Sauron.
- Use a generated name as a seed for a backstory rooted in distant Rhun.
Bringing Easterling characters to life
An Easterling name should hint at a culture that the Free Peoples never fully understood. When you choose one, consider the wider picture. What banner does this character ride under. What grievance or hope drove them west. Tolkien left the East largely blank, which is an invitation rather than a barrier. Use these names to sketch in the silhouettes of nations that history almost forgot.
Crafting Your Easterling Identity
Delve into the rich tapestry of Easterling culture and find inspiration for your character's name. Consider the elements that define your character's persona and background as you answer the following questions.
- What qualities or traits best describe your Easterling character?
- What significant event or struggle has shaped your character's life?
- What natural elements or landscapes resonate with your character's story?
- Does your character have a specific role or occupation within their community?
- What emotions or themes do you wish to convey through your character's name?
