Why Tolkien's Dwarves Sound the Way They Do
Tolkien borrowed many dwarf names from the Old Norse Voluspa, which is why Thorin, Fili, Kili, and Dwalin feel rooted in deep northern history. The result is a naming style heavy with hard consonants, short vowels, and a faint echo of saga verse. A good Lord of the Rings dwarf name should sound like it could be shouted across a forge or carved above a tomb without losing dignity.
Public Names and Hidden Names
Every dwarf in Middle-earth carries at least two names. The public name, used among Men and Elves, is what this generator focuses on. The inner Khuzdul name is shared only with kin and trusted companions, never inscribed on outsider maps. When you build a character, decide what their public name implies about their family trade, and keep their secret name as a private gift to the reader at a key moment.
Lineage and House
Dwarves identify themselves by father and forefather, often back several generations. A character might be Brundir son of Hrar, of the line of Durin. That genealogical weight changes how they react to insults, broken oaths, and lost halls. Use a generated name as the start of a family tree, then sketch two or three ancestors with their own deeds, betrayals, and forgotten holds.
Using the Names in Your Story
For tabletop, pair the name with a craft, a grudge, and a treasure they are sworn to recover. For fan fiction, plant the name in a roster of survivors from a sacked dwarven city and let readers wonder which kin survived with them. Either way, let each name carry the weight of stone, lineage, and quiet pride that Tolkien's Khazad always commanded.
Craft Your Unique Dwarf Name
Creating a memorable Dwarf name can add depth to your character. Consider these questions to inspire your naming process.
- What is your Dwarf's profession or trade?
- Does your Dwarf have any notable physical traits or characteristics?
- What is your Dwarf's clan or family background?
- What kind of personality does your Dwarf possess?
- Is there a specific item or weapon that your Dwarf is known for?
