A woman fighting in the Civil War: Sarah Edmonds
Sarah Edmonds was a Canadian born woman who posed as a man to serve in the Civil War. She was born in 1841. Her father died when she was young and her mother remarried, so she had to work as a seamstress to support the family. After being rejected from the Union Army because of her gender, she decided to cross the border and join the Confederates. She served for two years under the alias of Pvt. Franklin Thompson.
Edmonds is one of many women who disguised themselves as men during wartime and fought alongside their male counterparts on both sides of the conflict. These women were called “she-males” or “women soldiers” by their comrades.
Pretending to be a naval surgeon: Ferdinand Demara

How do you craft a good online fake identity?
You might not be a spy, but you still need to create a fake identity for your online activities. Creating a good fake identity is more than just creating an email address and picking a name. It can take some time, especially if you want to be convincing. The process can be daunting and even frustrating, but it is worth the effort. Creating a realistic identity usually entails gathering information about an individual from social media or other sources before creating an email address, choosing a memorable name, and adding photos to the account.
