Naming the hardware of the undercity
Zaun weaponsmiths borrow their vocabulary from chemistry, plumbing, and graveyards. A good chem-punk weapon name pairs an unsettling noun with a working verb, then sands the result down until it fits in one breath. The generator leans into this pattern, mixing terms like venom, sump, hex, slag, and choke with action words that imply something is about to happen to whoever stands across the room. The point is never elegance. The point is that the name tells you, instantly, what kind of harm is coming.
How crews choose a name
In Arcane flavored fiction, weapons are rarely mass produced. They are commissioned, scavenged, or won. A chem-baron might brand an entire line of pistols after a personal grudge, while a lone enforcer-killer in the Lanes will rename a found rifle every time it survives another job. Use the generated names to hint at provenance. A weapon called Greenlung Whisper feels like it came from a backroom alchemist. A weapon called Bonejack Mk. III suggests a workshop that has done this many times before.
Putting weapons into your story
When you drop one of these names into a scene, let it do narrative work. Describe the smell of the chemicals, the rattle of poorly seated parts, the warning label half scratched off the housing. Players and readers latch onto specifics, and a vivid weapon often becomes a character in its own right. Roll a few times, pick the name that makes you flinch, then build the rest of the scene around the question of who would willingly carry such a thing.
Arming Your Character
Ready to name your next dangerous tool? Ponder these points:
- Does the name sound like it was cobbled together from junk and chemical residue?
- Does it combine a technical term with a brutal action or a harsh sound?
- Does it hint at its deadly function or unique appearance?
- Will the name strike fear into the hearts of your enemies?
- Could it be a nickname derived from an unexpected side effect or a notorious wielder?
