Yoruba names are famously meaningful. Oluwaseun means God has done this, Adebayo means the crown meets joy, Folake means honor handed to me to care for, and Ayodele means joy comes home. These are not poetic translations layered on later, they are the literal meaning of the name as spoken. Parents choose names that record what was happening when the child arrived, what they hope the child will become, or what they want to thank the divine for. Reading a Yoruba name well is reading a small story.
The naming ceremony
A Yoruba child traditionally receives names at the iko mo jade, a naming ceremony held seven, eight, or nine days after birth depending on gender and tradition. Multiple names may be given by different relatives, each carrying its own meaning and blessing. Symbolic items like honey, salt, kola nut, and water are tasted to wish the child sweetness, flavor, longevity, and adaptability. A character's full set of names can therefore reflect an entire family's hopes, not just one parent's choice.
Oriki and praise names
Beyond the formal names, every Yoruba person has an oriki, a praise name or set of poetic lines that celebrate their lineage, character, and personal qualities. Oriki are recited at ceremonies, sung to soothe children, and used to honor adults. They often reference ancestors, towns of origin, and family achievements. For writers, giving a character an oriki alongside their everyday name is a wonderful way to hint at backstory and family pride without lengthy exposition.
Using Yoruba names in your work
Whether your story is set in Lagos, Ibadan, the historic city of Ife, or the diaspora communities of London, Atlanta, or Salvador da Bahia, a meaningful Yoruba name grounds your character. Consider what the name says about the family's circumstances, faith, and aspirations. Pair it with a praise line if the moment calls for it. The result is a character whose very name carries the weight of generations and the music of one of Africa's great languages.
