Skip list of categoriesThe structure of Frankish names
Frankish names are dithematic, meaning they combine two meaningful elements into one name. Hludwig, the source of Louis, joins hlud, meaning famous, with wig, meaning battle. Karl, behind Charles, originally meant a free man. Hrodbert, the source of Robert, blends fame with bright. The generator builds names from authentic Germanic roots like bert, gar, hild, mund, ric, and wald, producing combinations that sound right to a medievalist's ear.
Men, women, and meaning
Male Frankish names often emphasized strength, fame, and rule, with elements like ric, meaning ruler, and bald, meaning bold. Names like Theodoric, Sigibert, and Childeric belonged to kings and warlords. Female names favored elements like hild, meaning battle, gund, also meaning battle, and trud, meaning strength. Brunhild, Fredegund, and Radegund were powerful queens whose names matched their reputations. The generator keeps these patterns intact.
Merovingian versus Carolingian flavor
Earlier Merovingian names, from the fifth to seventh centuries, lean toward forms like Chlothar, Childebert, and Dagobert, with the distinctive ch and th spellings reflecting Latin scribes wrestling with Germanic sounds. Later Carolingian names, from the eighth and ninth centuries, smooth out toward Karl, Pippin, Bernhard, and Lothar. If your story has a specific century in mind, the generator can lean either way to keep the flavor period-correct.
Using the names in fiction
When writing dialogue, remember that these names were spoken with full Germanic weight, not the softened French or English forms we know today. A character named Hludwig in 800 would not have been called Louis. Surnames as we know them barely existed; people were identified by patronymics, places, or epithets like the Bald, the Pious, or of Aachen. Lean into that, and your Frankish characters will feel genuinely of their age.
