A good prompt has to surface those questions in the first two clauses or the character is just a leather jacket and a cigarette. How the Prompts Are Built
Each prompt follows a simple shape: a driver, a car, a habit, and a hinge. The driver is the person. The car is the make, model, and modification that pegs the scene to a real garage. The habit is the ritual that signals the job is on, the route is set, or the driver is in a certain mood. The hinge is the small fact that turns a profile into a story problem rather than a character sheet. A handful of prompts stretch into a chapter's worth of premise, but most of them are tight enough to drop straight into a treatment or a session plan.
The collection is organized into topical lenses rather than job tiers. The first batch covers the vehicle make and modification. The next batch covers the route trick through back streets. The rest of the prompt is scaffolding to make that detail land.
Using the Prompts at the Table
Treat each prompt as a driver brief, not a list. The first clause is the driver. The second clause is the car or the habit. The last clause is the question the scene will answer. A good rule of thumb is to spend the first ten minutes of the session reading three or four prompts out loud, then ask the table which driver they would want to ride with. Most of the time the players will hand you the entire arc in the next breath.
For solo writing, take the strongest single detail and write a thousand words around it. Do not try to use the whole prompt. Pick the line that surprised you and use that as the seed. A good driver prompt is a hook and a frame. It is not a synopsis.
Tips for Drafting From a Driver Prompt
- Open with the key turning, not with the job being proposed. The story starts the moment the engine catches and the cassette cues.
- Name the hinge in the first paragraph. If the reader does not know what is wrong with the driver by the end of the opening, the scene stalls.
- Give the driver a reason to take the next job and a reason to leave the last one. The best driver scenes run on that tension.
- Let the mentor be specific. A driver who learned to heel-toe from a man named Pops in Gary is more useful than a driver who learned from a forgotten king.
- Use the cassette, the scanner, the dispatch code, the windshield sticker, the glovebox charm, the rule about passengers, and the parking direction before you describe the engine. A driver is a stack of habits first.
- Do not resolve the scar in the same scene that mentions it. The scar is the sequel hook, not the scene's job.
- End on a question the readers will want to follow. The driver parks facing out, the driver kills the engine, the driver sits for ninety seconds, the next chapter starts with the next job.
- Keep the route, the car, the nickname, and the mentor in the scene. These are the small artifacts that make a driver feel real.
