A history of ancient Germany
The region now known as Germany has been inhabited for thousands of years. The first human settlers arrived in the area during the Paleolithic era, and the first Germanic tribes began settling in the region around 2,000 BCE. Over the centuries, the Germanic tribes slowly began to coalesce into larger groups, and by the 1st century CE there were three major tribal confederations in what is now Germany: the Franks in the west, the Alamanni in the south, and the Saxons in the north.
During the 4th and 5th centuries, these tribal confederations came into conflict with Rome as they expanded their territories. The Franks were eventually able to conquer most of Roman Gaul (present-day France), while the Alamanni and Saxons were pushed back into present-day Germany.
