Who are the Worgen in the Warcraft universe?
The Warcraft universe is full of strange and wonderful creatures, but none are quite so enigmatic as the Worgen. These wolf-like beings are shrouded in mystery, and their origins are unknown. What is known is that they are fierce warriors, and they have a long-standing rivalry with the werewolves of Azeroth. In recent years, the Worgen have made a comeback in the Warcraft universe, thanks to the efforts of one brave hero.
A history of Worgen in Warcraft
The Worgen, a species of wild, wolf-like creatures from the Warcraft series, have had a confusing and trying history. At first, the Worgen were people who lived in the human kingdom of Gilneas, which is now part of the Eastern Kingdoms. The people of Gilneas were extremely proud, so they kept to themselves and did not get involved in the wars and politics of the neighboring nations. But they were also sophisticated and had a powerful navy. The Curse of the Worgen first appeared during this time. Their own navy had discovered the islands of Blackmore, home to the Worgen, and brought the disease to their kingdom. The Curse spread rapidly and eventually affected half of the kingdom, transforming the populace into lycanthropes. The kingdom of Gilneas soon faced a new threat as if the Curse of the Worgen weren't already enough. The plague-ravaged lands of Lordaeron to the north began to be invaded by the Forsaken, a devious race of undead led by the powerful Lich King. To stop the curse from spreading, the leaders of Gilneas made a desperate order to isolate the kingdom from the outside world and quarantine its citizens. The worgen had to start from scratch in the midst of such turmoil. They were first treated with kindness and welcomed into the ranks of the Alliance forces. The newly christened Worgen were trained as Alliance soldiers and taught the ways of civilization by Varian Wrynn, the son of Gilneas' previous king. Today, the Worgen are one of the Alliance's most powerful and revered members. They not only control the kingdom of Gilneas right now, but they are also well-represented in Stormwind's armies. The fears of their transformation into wolves have long since vanished, and they are now welcomed as an essential component of the Alliance. Since their initial state of confusion and terror, the Worgen have advanced to a position of honor, respect, and power within the Alliance. They have emerged stronger and more powerful after centuries of hardship. The Worgen have stood their ground, proving themselves to be formidable warriors in the face of adversity from the Scourge of Death to the Alliance.
