What are Half Elves?
Half Elves are a fantasy race that is a mix of a Human parent and an Elven parent. You'll find them all over fictional worlds, often taking some of the best traits from their parents. They tend to be as strong, inventive, curious and ambitious as Humans, while at the same time having the attuned senses, magic and love of nature of Elves. In terms of appearance, it is often difficult to tell a Half Elf apart from a regular Elf. One of the only tells is that Half Elves can grow facial hair and that they have a greater ability to build up muscles than Elves do.
Half Elves have great charisma. As many races that do not fully belong, they are often shunned by both their Human and Elven heritage, forcing them to claim a place in society through diplomacy. This makes Half Elves great communicators and wonderful travel companions.
What kind of lifespan do Half Elves have?
Elves are typically immortal and Humans have a relatively short lifespan. Depending on which universe you're in, Half Elves can be like either or sit somewhere in the middle. In Middle Earth for example, by default they receive the immortality of Elves, but are given a choice at a mortal life. In Lord of the Rings, Arwen chooses this.
In other universes, Half Elves are often not immortal, but they do enjoy (or suffer) a much longer lifespan than their Human counterparts.
A history of half-elves
For centuries, half-elves have been a part of fantasy literature. They appear frequently in Dungeons and Dragons, books, and movies. The idea of the half-elf is, in many ways, a representation of the struggle between opposing forces, typically humans and elves. This conflict, which explores issues of identity and cultural differences, is also significant in the genre's past. The Middle Ages' literature contains the earliest mentions of half-elves. During this time, the idea of creating a hybrid between humans and elves was viewed as a means of reconciling the two races, which were thought to be in complete opposition to one another. These hybrids, which allowed them to participate in the supernatural world while maintaining their humanity, were featured in the poetry of the Middle English poet Geoffrey Chaucer. The works of William Shakespeare also included references to half-elves. This was probably due to England's long-standing ties to the elves and their ability to use magic. They were frequently used by Shakespeare to explore themes of identity and persecution while also bringing together two opposing viewpoints. Half-elves didn't really become a big deal and become ingrained in fantasy culture until the 20th century. Arwen, the half-elf daughter of Elrond and Aragorn, was a character in the Lord of the Rings trilogy, which is frequently cited as the definitive work in this genre. Her half-elf status was important to the plot because it showed how strong her character was and how well she could fit in with both human and elven communities. Half-elves have become a staple in both role-playing games and computer games over the following decades as a form of entertainment. The race of half-elves were introduced as playable characters in the first installment of the Dungeons and Dragons series, which is perhaps the most well-known role-playing game series. As a result, players had unprecedented creative leeway as they were able to develop their own half-elves and investigate their own meanings and stories. Since then, numerous works have featured half-elves, and the idea of them is still deeply ingrained in fantasy literature. Half-elves continue to explore identity and cultural differences in fantastical ways, from William Shakespeare to The Lord of the Rings to contemporary computer games and novels.
