What is hippie culture?
Hippie culture is a subculture that began in the United States during the late 1960s and spread to other countries around the world. The hippie movement was inspired by Eastern religions, particularly Buddhism and Hinduism, as well as the writings of Beat Generation authors like Jack Kerouac and Allen Ginsberg.
Hippies advocated for peace, love, and harmony, rejecting materialism and consumerism. They were often associated with alternative lifestyles such as vegetarianism, free love, and drug use. Many hippies were also active in the civil rights and environmental movements.
The hippie subculture continues to influence popular culture today. The peace symbol, for example, is still widely used as a symbol of protest or solidarity. Hippie fashion choices like tie-dye shirts and Birkenstocks are also still popular today.
A history of hippies
Midway through the 1960s, the youth culture of the United States was closely linked to the hippie subculture. The term "hippie," pronounced "hipp-eyez," comes from the word "hipster," which means "cool" or "ahead of their time." Its adherents were known as "hippies." The hippie movement was notable for its support of unconventional lifestyles, communal living, artistic expression, recreational drug use, and an idealism that rejected the 1950s' traditional materialistic values. It has its beginnings in the 1950s' bohemian beatnik culture, which in turn has its beginnings in the jazz era of the 1920s and 1930s. In response to what they perceived as a society that was oppressive and hypocritical, hippies sought to establish a counterculture. They experimented with communal living arrangements, embraced psychedelic drugs, and participated in a variety of countercultural activities. They started going on trips to hippie-themed events like San Francisco's Human Be-In and Woodstock in the late 1960s. The perceived conformity and materialism of the 1950s and 1960s, which enraged many of its members, prompted the hippie movement in part. The romantic ideals of free love, communal living, and drug-induced spiritual exploration captivated them. People from all walks of life, including Beat Generation authors, politicized civil rights activists, and freethinkers, were drawn to this way of life. Additionally, hippie culture held a strong anti-war sentiment, which was especially evident during the Vietnam War. Its members expressed their opposition to the war and support for the peace movement by participating in antiwar marches and campus sit-ins. The exuberance, daring fashion, acceptance of recreational drug use, psychedelic music, and hairstyles of hippies made them famous. By the middle of the 1970s, members of the counterculture had begun to take more conventional routes, and this led to the dissolution of the hippie movement. It almost vanished from the public consciousness in the 1980s, and it wasn't revived until the late 1990s and early 2000s through "hippie revival" trends like New Age and rave culture. The original hippie movement's spirit of love, peace, and freedom persists despite its demise. The spirit of exploration, nonconformity, and individualism that characterized the hippie movement is still evident today, and many of the fashion, music, and lifestyle choices that hippies pioneered are now widely accepted.
