What exactly is an asylum?
An asylum is a place where people who have been persecuted for their beliefs or actions can go to seek refuge. The first known use of the term asylum was in ancient Greece, where it was used to describe a place of sanctuary for fugitives and criminals. In the United States, the term has come to be used primarily in reference to places where immigrants can go to seek protection from persecution in their home countries.
A history of asylums
Throughout history, the history of asylums has been largely ignored. For centuries, the term "asylum" was used to refer to a variety of facilities, including those that treated the mentally ill as well as criminals and the physically ill. In the 16th century, the term "asylum" was first used to describe a place of safety and protection, typically a religious institution. In the 18th century, governments adopted the term "asylum" to describe mental health care facilities. One of the earliest known asylums in England, the Bedlam hospital in London, was built specifically to treat people with mental illness. Physical restraint, gross dehumanization, and toxic therapies were all part of the bizarre Bedlam treatment model. The facility quickly became a public symbol of mental hospital cruelty, which is not surprising. Mental health facilities began to pop up all over Europe, the United States, and the United Kingdom in the 19th century. Many of the concepts that are still associated with modern mental health treatment were first implemented during this time. Talking therapies, recreational activities, and occupational therapy were among these. However, by the middle of the 20th century, many of these facilities had been closed because of public outcry and the barbaric treatments and poor conditions in many of the asylums of the time. The years that followed the closure of numerous large asylums were marked by significant social change. The Mental Health Act of 1959 and the development of Psychiatric Social Work signaled a shift away from the institutionalization of the mentally ill toward a model that emphasized community treatment and care. The deinstitutionalization movement, which revolutionized mental health care, began with this shift. Mental health services now encompass a wide range of services, from crisis and inpatient care to community-based support and outreach programs. Despite the fact that the majority of mental health services' inpatient wing is no longer referred to as an "asylum," the term still carries a lot of historical and stigmatizing connotations, giving the general public a frequently erroneous impression of what mental health services really are about. In the end, the history of asylums is troubling because it is full of injustice in society and outmoded treatment methods. However, as modern mental health practice develops, we are finally beginning to observe a shift away from the traditional models of care and toward a more person-centered, compassionate approach to addressing mental health issues.
