How do bridges get their names?
Most bridges are named after the engineer who designed them or the politician who funded their construction. But sometimes, the name is chosen through a more creative process. In New York, for example, the city's Department of Transportation solicits suggestions from the public and then holds a vote to decide on the new name.
This was the case for the Ed Koch Queensboro Bridge, which was renamed in 2011 after the city's former mayor who had died earlier that year. The process of renaming the bridge began with a call for submissions from interested members of the public. More than 1,000 suggestions were submitted and narrowed down to four finalists: Big Apple Bridge, Queensboro Pride Bridge, Mayor LaGuardia Bridge and Ed Koch Queensboro Bridge.
A history of bridges
The Old Kingdom of Egypt, where the first known functional bridges were constructed, is the location where the history of bridges can be traced back nearly 6,000 years. The earliest bridges were straightforward wooden structures that were easy to cross. Multiple arches on some of these ancient bridges were primitive, but they were effective at crossing voids like gorges and ravines. The basic design of bridges has remained the same since their inception and has been used to bridge increasingly larger gaps. It is believed that the ancient Romans invented new methods for building bridges that used arch and vaulting designs to span much greater distances. With advancements in engineering and new materials, these bridges got better over time. The Pont du Gard Aqueduct in southern France is one of the Romans' most famous and enduring bridges. From the Middle Ages to the 16th century, new and larger bridge projects were the result of engineering advancements. The Great Stone Bridge in London and the Ponte Vecchio in Florence were two of the greatest bridges built during this time period. Cities were transformed by these bridges, which opened up previously unconnected regions to new connections. Material science and civil engineering advancements led to the construction of revolutionary bridges all over the world by the 18th century. Edmund Ludlow, whose bridges, such as the Walnut Street Bridge in Philadelphia, were among the tallest structures in the world at the time, was a major contributor to the development of bridge engineering. Bridge building made unprecedented progress in the 19th century. During this time, many of the world's most iconic bridges were constructed, including the Eads Bridge in St. Louis, which was the first steel and iron cantilever bridge, and the Tower Bridge in London. Additionally, the steel truss bridge and the modern suspension bridge were developed as a result of advancements in hydraulic engineering. The beginning of the 20th century saw the development of novel and one-of-a-kind methods for building bridges, frequently combining a number of earlier and new approaches. Engineers were able to construct bridges with much longer and higher spans thanks to the development of novel bridge designs like the cantilever and truss designs. Today, bridges help make cities more efficient, sustainable, and livable by developing and connecting remote areas. Bridges are being constructed in record time and with increasingly sophisticated designs as materials and technologies advance. The construction of bridges has been an ongoing process of technological advancement and engineering proficiency that has been redesigned for the modern era. New bridges are built with each new generation to improve the efficiency of people- and goods-transportation. These structures are an important investment in the infrastructure of our cities, towns, and villages, whether they cross roads, bodies of water, or other terrain.
