They evolved into the first tetrapods, or animals with four legs, through natural selection. This split took place about 365 million years ago and was a major change in the animal kingdom. It opened the way for all kinds of animals, including mammals, to evolve in the future. Science continues to study fish closely today, but it is still unclear why some species thrive and others do not. This is mostly because they can find a wide range of environments, climates, and prey, as well as constantly shifting competition.
