Why do people like keeping hamsters as pets?
Some people like keeping hamsters as pets because they are small and low-maintenance. They do not need to be taken for walks, and only require a cage and some food and water. Hamsters are also relatively quiet, so they will not disturb your sleep at night.
A history of hamsters
The first domestic hamster was brought to the United States in 1936, beginning a long line of hamsters. Because of their small size and ease of care, hamsters have become common household pets ever since. For centuries, hamsters have been bred and kept as pets. They were once thought to be rodents that hibernate in the winter and are native to Europe and parts of Asia. Since ancient times, hamsters have been the subject of legend and folklore. They were said to be cursed versions of badgers or mice in some cultures, while others thought they were miniature dragons. Their gentle nature made them popular with pet owners in the Middle Ages, and their soft fur was used to make clothing. In some cultures, they even became symbols of fertility, good fortune, and wealth. Hamsters were first brought aboard ships by Dutch fishermen in the seventeenth century to combat vermin. Hamsters arrived in the British Isles in the eighteenth century and quickly became a popular pet there as well. Sadly, their popularity had waned by the nineteenth century's end. Some theories suggest that certain diseases led to a decline in their numbers, while others believe that their habitats were destroyed, though the exact cause is unknown. They became much less common in homes as a result. Israel Aharoni, a zoologist, established a breeding program in Jerusalem in 1931 to begin capturing farm-raised hamsters and reintroducing them into the wild, boosting their population once more. Their population began to rapidly expand as a result of this breeding program's success. The first domestic hamsters were introduced to the United States in 1936 by a researcher by the name of C. J. Baker. Much to the delight of breeders and pet owners alike, these hamsters became extremely popular as household pets in a short period of time. They quickly became beloved family members due to their small size and ease of care. The hamster species has continued to develop new varieties as a result of their increased popularity. The Syrian hamster, also known as the teddy bear hamster, and the Russian Dwarf hamster are two of today's most popular pet hamsters. Due to their small size and playful nature, hamsters are still adored as pets. They're easy to find in pet stores and come in a wide range of sizes and colors to suit today's pet owners. One of the many ways people can connect with these adorable little creatures and begin to learn more about them is by owning one.
