How are newly discovered fish named?
When a new species of fish is discovered, it must be given a scientific name. The process of naming a new species is known as taxonomy. The first step in taxonomy is to describe the new species in detail, including its physical characteristics, habitat, and behavior. This description is then compared to existing descriptions of similar species to determine if it is truly a new species. If it is determined to be a new species, the next step is to give it a scientific name.
The scientific name of a fish consists of two parts: the genus and the specific epithet. The genus is the larger group to which the fish belongs, and the specific epithet is used to distinguish this particular fish from other members of its genus.
A history of fish
Fish are among the most recognizable animals on the planet due to their incredible variety of shapes, sizes, and colors, which has existed for millions of years. They are kept so frequently as pets and food all over the world, which is not surprising. The history of the fish is fascinating—from their humble beginnings as simple, jawless fish around 530 million years ago to their highly evolved state today. Most of the time, the earliest fish didn't have complex features, like jaws or bone structures. Because they lacked scales and other bony structures, their fossils and teeth are the only evidence we have of them. A significant evolutionary split took place around 395 million years ago, during the Devonian period. The "ray-finned" fish and the "lobefin" fish, which are the ancestors of the modern lobe-finned fish, were on opposite branches. The vast majority of fish on the planet still belong to these two groups, which are without a doubt the most successful and diverse. Gills gave ray-finned fish the ability to filter more water and powerful jaws helped them feed on other fish and plants more effectively. Both their mobility as a whole and their ability to swim improved, giving them access to a greater variety and range of prey. Since there are currently approximately 28,000 species of ray-finned fish in the world, this provided them with a distinct advantage in evolutionary terms. Lobefins, on the other hand, were beginning to develop a more complex set of fins, giving them more stability and muscle to move around and the ability to propel themselves out of the water. They evolved into the first tetrapods, or animals with four legs, through natural selection. This split took place about 365 million years ago and was a major change in the animal kingdom. It opened the way for all kinds of animals, including mammals, to evolve in the future. Science continues to study fish closely today, but it is still unclear why some species thrive and others do not. This is mostly because they can find a wide range of environments, climates, and prey, as well as constantly shifting competition. Fish continue to captivate and excite us, and we can be sure that they will continue to do so indefinitely. Their amazing history makes them even more amazing, and their evolution is still one of the most fascinating events ever.
