Where do holiday names like Christmas and Easter come from?
Most holidays are named for the thing they celebrate. Christmas is named for Jesus Christ, and Easter is named for the resurrection of Jesus Christ. But where do other holiday names like Thanksgiving and Halloween come from?
The answer may surprise you. Many of these holiday names actually come from pagan celebrations that were later co-opted by Christians. For example, the name “Easter” actually comes from the pagan goddess Eostre. Similarly, the name “Christmas” comes from the pagan festival of Saturnalia, which was a celebration of the god Saturn.
So if you’re ever wondering where a holiday name comes from, it’s likely that it has its origins in paganism. But don’t worry – these days, most pagans are just happy to share their holidays with everyone!
A history of holidays
Since the beginning of recorded history, holidays have been an integral part of every culture. People who live in a world that is constantly moving and changing are especially in need of a time of celebration, relaxation, and healing during the holidays. Holidays were initially established to commemorate and celebrate religious beliefs. They frequently fell on days when crops were being planted and harvested, as well as the natural seasonal cycle. The worship of particular deities, such as the gods and goddesses of Ancient Greece and Rome, was associated with many of these festivals. The Middle English haliday and the Old English haligdg are where the word "holiday" comes from. It comes from the word "holy day," which meant a day set aside to honor a deity or other spiritual figure. The celebrations of Saturnalia and Floralia, which were dedicated to the agricultural deities, and Easter, a pre-Christian ceremony, were among the ancient Roman holidays. Records indicate that certain holidays, such as Christmas and Easter, were celebrated in some form as far back as antiquity, despite the fact that the precise dates of some ancient holidays are unknown. For instance, pagan Rome made the celebration of the winter solstice, also known as the "twelfth night," a significant public holiday beginning in the third century BC. Holidays that were associated with Christianity also spread. Religious holidays also increased as more nations adopted Christianity as a result of European colonialism. Christmas as we know it today was originally a Christian holiday to commemorate Jesus' birth, and Easter is a Christian holiday to commemorate Jesus' death and resurrection. Festivals were held all over Europe to welcome the transition of the year from summer to winter and from winter to spring. The purpose of these celebrations was to mark the passage of time. Feasting, drinking, dancing, plays, and other forms of entertainment were common at these festivals. Traditional pagan practices were sometimes incorporated into the celebrations. Other holidays were established to recognize or honor significant political or historical events. For instance, the United States observes Independence Day, also known as the Fourth of July, as a national holiday to commemorate the country's declaration of independence from Great Britain in 1776. The same is true for a lot of other countries, like Australia, which has Anzac Day to remember the soldiers who died in World War I. Many countries also have festive holidays to remember important days in their history, like the Day of the Dead in Mexico or the Mid-Autumn Festival in China. We are able to unwind from the stresses of everyday life by taking a break during the holidays, which provide us with an important time to reflect, unwind, and heal. They give us a chance to re-connect with the natural world, our families, and our customs, as well as to celebrate our humanity as a whole. Consequently, holidays continue to be an essential component of our lives and cultural histories.
