Click the button to get a set of possible powers and keep refreshing to grab more. The tool is designed to provide a mix of common, popular powers as well as funny, unconventional ones.
What are the most popular superpowers?
When talking about the most popular superpowers a hero can have, Superman directly comes to mind. Whereas most superheroes only have one power, he has had a wide array of them in various issues that have all gone on to pop up individually in different settings. A selection:
- Flying
- Super strength
- Super speed
- Laser eyes
- Advanced vision (x-ray, heat, telescopic and microscopic vision)
- Advanced hearing
- Invulnerability
- Super breath
- Super intelligence
- Hypnotism
- Healing
Almost all powers in this list manifest themselves frequently in other heroes. Think of Wolverine's healing abilities, Bruce Wayne's intelligence (although technically not considered a superpower) or the amazing speed of the Flash. Going beyond that list, other powers are by now at least as iconic as these classical ones. How about Storm's ability to control the weather, Mystique's shapeshifting or Jean Grey's and Professor X's psychic abilities?
The appeal of superpowers
We've all known the feeling of waking up in the morning, having dreamt of being able to fly. Or that embarrassing situation in high school where you wish you could have been invisible. Being able to time travel is surely also something you've wished for at some point in your life, or having the option to teleport anywhere in the world.
Unfortunately this has to remain a fantasy, but given a vivid imagination, you can get quite close to experiencing what it would be like.
About the origin of superpowers
The idea of superheroes and their superhuman abilities has always evoked a sense of mystery, fantasy, and wonder since its inception in the latter part of the 19th century. This kind of "wish fulfillment" is seen in many superhero stories today because humans have always been fascinated by the idea that they could one day possess incredible abilities and be more powerful than they are now. But where did the literary concept of superpowers originate? How did this idea, which can be found in both comic books and movies, come about? The "Iliad," Homer's classic epic, is where superhuman abilities were first mentioned in literature. The gods and goddesses of Greek mythology in this heroic poem have superhuman abilities like the ability to fly, superhuman strength, and shape-shifting. However, it's not just these gods; Many of the heroes depicted in this poem, most notably Achilles and Odysseus, are credited with incredible feats of courage and strength due to their god-given abilities. The Ancient Romans also supported this concept of heroes with superhuman abilities. The hero Aeneas in Virgil's "Aeneid" is able to carry out his heroic duties by summoning the gods' powers. These superhuman abilities are not exclusive to gods, as in the Iliad: Aeneas accomplishes numerous heroic deeds with strength and courage that serve as examples for future generations of warriors to follow. The concept of superpowers in literature did not gain widespread acceptance until the middle to late 19th century, despite its origins in Ancient Greece and Rome. William Shakespeare's plays like "Macbeth," "Romeo and Juliet," and "Othello" were written during this time. The witches in "Macbeth" and Julius Caesar's ghost in "Julius Caesar" and other supernatural figures were frequently used in these plays to create drama and suspense for the audience. Soon after, in the early 20th century, writers like H.G. Wells, Jules Verne, and H.P. Lovecraft began writing novels with characters who had extraordinary powers. These authors often got their ideas from Shakespeare and other classic writers. Wells, for instance, depicts an invader alien race in "The War of the Worlds" with superhuman strength and the capacity to project a death ray from their eyes. In a similar vein, the fantastic Captain Nemo from Jules Verne's "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea" is a brilliant inventor who constructs his own submarine and develops the technology for its underwater navigation. The idea that humans could have superhuman abilities was significantly influenced by these works of science fiction. However, it wasn't until the comic book industry was established in the late 1930s that the concept of superheroes and superpowers became widely accepted. With their incredible powers and ability to save the world, superheroes like Superman, Wonder Woman, and Spider-Man quickly caught readers' attention and set the stage for superheroes to become a popular literary and cinematic genre. It is not difficult to comprehend why literary superpowers continue to captivate readers and audiences. We still find ourselves drawn to the concept of a person—or alien, or monster—with superhuman abilities who can take on impossible tasks and ultimately protect the world from evil, from the ancient Homeric epics to today's expensive blockbuster films. Although the idea of superpowers in literature has undergone significant evolution over the past two centuries, it remains as captivating today as it was when Homer first proposed it.
