A Literary Tradition
This exercise belongs to a tradition called lipogram writing. Ernest Vincent Wright wrote an entire novel without E. It sounds impossible until you try it.
What makes this valuable isn't the novelty—it's the way constraints force creativity. When your usual vocabulary is suddenly off-limits, you think harder about every word choice.
Write Without the Most Common Letter
Start typing and you'll discover that the letter 'E' has been disabled. Press the key, and nothing appears. You'll need to work around it.
Common words become impossible. 'The' must become 'that' or 'a.' Every sentence requires creative problem-solving.
The exercise highlights any accidental E's that slip through.
