Break Your Word Patterns
This constraint breaks you out of your usual word patterns. When you end a sentence with 'x' or 'q,' you can't rely on your default vocabulary. You have to dig deeper, remember words you haven't used in years, or invent creative workarounds.
It's especially good for writers who feel stuck in a rut. When your usual choices are blocked, you're forced to think differently—and that's where interesting writing happens. Plus, it's genuinely fun once you get into the rhythm.
Letter by Letter
Write your first sentence however you like. Then look at the last letter—your next sentence must begin with that letter. If your sentence ends with 'door,' your next sentence starts with 'R.'
The exercise tracks your sentences and highlights the linking letters, so you always know where you stand. Some letters are easy; others will have you reaching for unusual words.
Keep going for the duration of your session. The constraint becomes second nature after a few minutes, and you'll find yourself planning sentence endings as you write.
