Maria Nestorides was born in London, England, in the swinging sixties, but her whole family relocated to the Arabian Gulf when she was just 7 years old after her father got a job with a construction company there. By the time she was 21, she had lived in several countries, each time for a period of no more than two years. She met her husband in 1988 and they moved to New York to attend university there.

She now lives in Cyprus with her two teenage children and her husband and works as a spy for the Cyprus government. Well, okay, she’s not a spy, but that’s what she tells people when she’s making small talk at parties because she thinks it sounds a little more interesting than telling them she’s an Administrative Officer.

She likes to read, exercise, meditate and she’s passionate about food (not when she has to cook it) and wine (not necessarily in that order).

She has always loved to read and decided that she wanted to try her hand at writing when she was in her thirties. She took a creative writing course in 2004 and has been hooked ever since. She finds her inspiration in little things that happen in her everyday life. The latest story she wrote (‘Sand in My Shoes’) was inspired by a song.

Maria Nestorides’ other publications

Her short stories ‘Red Letter Day’ and ‘Voodoo Heads’ were published online by Five Stop Story, and she contributed a six-word memoir to the book ‘Six-Word Memoirs on Love and Heartbreak: by Writers Famous and Obscure’, by Larry Smith and Rachel Fershleiser (Jan 6, 2009).

Her short story ‘Whispers of Love’ was published here on Story Shack in December 2014.

In 2011 Maria received an MA in Creative Writing and she has a novel in progress set in Morocco.

Maria’s sources of inspiration

Maria looks up to many authors: to classic authors such as Charles Dickens and Jane Austen and to contemporary authors such as Alexander McCall Smith, Agatha Christie, Stephen King, Nicholas Sparks, Gabriel Garcia Marquez and Paulo Coelho. She loves to read suspense, romance, and mystery novels and mainly prefers plot-driven stories.

She considers it a great prize for to be able to craft a complete story, one that makes her heart pulse as she writes it, and one that people enjoy reading. She hopes that she will always have the inspiration and the determination to get those stories that pop into her head onto paper as she is a firm believer that we all have a little bit of ourselves to give to others.

Need You Now

The ice cubes in the whisky clink as I swirl the glass in my hand. The numbness has started to spread through my body and I welcome it. Each sip of the amber liquid mutes the ache that has throbbed…

Sand in my Shoes

The flight back into London Heathrow was bumpy and the sky grey and cloudy. Back in my flat, sirens blare outside the window, cars race. Where are they all going in such a hurry? I toss my …
